Achieving ‘sustainable’ development requires us to take a different view of the way we design, construct and use the built environment. Methods of measuring the cost of ownership and operation of facilities require a broader view – a view which captures performance and impacts of developments beyond initial cost, and across the environmental, social and financial spectrum.

My contribution to supporting a deeper understanding of the complex framework of materials, construction methods, operational management and facility renewal and/or disposal strategies, is to draw alongside design teams and research projects, to construct flexible, usable modelling tools.
